There are a few points in our lives that are filled with stress, and if we aren’t careful, it might begin to feel like it is taking over.

Luckily, we are more aware as a society of the effects that stress can have on people mentally and physically, so there are many more things out there to help you through the tough times and reduce the stress of studying.

When it comes to university, many people assume that persistent stress is a given. But this mindset could definitely be harmful!

Here are a few tips to help you beat that seemingly perpetual student stress and pursue a more manageable stress.

Music

Music has magical powers (well, maybe not magical…) and it can transform your mood.

Spend some time putting together a playlist of songs that you know boost your mood.

Research says that songs that give you chills release a healthy dose of dopamine. To get you started here are three songs that Montreal Neurological Institute recommends:

Tiesto: Adagio for Strings, Parade of the Athletes version

Explosions in the Sky: First Breath After Coma

Debussy: Clair de Lune

Laugh

Unsurprisingly, laugher really can be the best medicine. If you have a hilarious friend, it might be time to call them into action, alternatively (or combine the two), head to a comedy show.

Face Them

Sometimes we find it easier to bury our heads in the sand and carry around our problems. Aside from being really unhealthy, some issues just don’t go away without you taking care of them.

When it comes to things like student debt worries you can research the best place to refinance student loans, and start to put that issue to bed.

Career wise, seek help from mentors and the careers office. It is normal to be worried about the future to a certain extent, but if you feel it’s taking over – seek someone to talk to.

Switch Off

We are so deeply in the habit of scrolling through social media, we don’t always stop to think about the impact that can have on us. We all have that friend who finds it effortless to look chic, work out, manage a career, study on the side and earn big bucks… Or so the internet would have us believe.

Everyone has their own issues, and sometimes it is better to unplug from things like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram – just for a little while.

If you don’t want to unplug completely, try to put your phone on airplane mode for a while or use an app like Forest, which plants trees the longer you stay off your phone!

Move More

Any time of sport, or simply getting out and walking relieves stress in no time at all. Your body will produce endorphins which make you feel great.

30 minutes a day is all you need to start bringing those stress levels down. You might not feel like it at the time, but it is always worth it.

Peace

Meditation is the art of just ‘being’ for a period of time. Sounds easy right? Well, not for everyone.

Deep breathing and letting thoughts pass you by can do wonders. Just ten minutes a day, which anyone can fit in, will boost your oxygen levels and calm that noisy mind. I also really enjoy yoga for its meditative effects!
