I started off 2018 in an unusual way- halfway through my year off of school, the first time I had ever taken a true REST and break from the constant rat race that was my life up until then.
I can’t believe it has been a year since then. A year where my life has completely changed. I got into the school of my dreams (which I’m completely in LOVE with), moved states, started school, and stopped dancing completely.
2017 was a turbulent year for me, no doubt about it. 2018 was a humbling year. I can’t believe I’ve gotten the opportunities that I have right now.
Some things I learned in 2018…
- What you affirm about yourself WILL be the truth
- College is hard. It is for everyone: academically, spiritually, socially, emotionally….. if you’re struggling, welcome to the club
- It cannot be my job to be anyone’s counselor. As much as I want to help others, there is only so much I can do
- A relationship that starts out with emotional dependency is unhealthy and will not last
- Hurt people hurt people….. you can’t take anything personally
- There is nothing like the love of your family and your best friends. Hold on to the people that make you feel their love
- Spontaneity does not equate to hastiness! Take advantage of the opportunities to do something new and out of the ordinary
People I learned from in 2018…
There’s not enough space to list out EVERYONE that has inspired me in 2018, but I wanted to shoutout some “influencers” that y’all should follow!
- My family! My dad, mom, uncle, baby cousin (that’s you, Zavy!)
- Survivors of Hurricane Harvey that I got to interact with while working at Katy Christian Ministries
- Atiya Bloom, from The Bloom Blog
- Ambreen from The Muslim Therapist
- My parents 🙂
Quotes I loved in 2018…
- Anything and everything by Rumi (especially these quotes)
- “If your soul isn’t craving the One Who made it, you’re too full of the food of the world”- unknown
- “Don’t dig up in doubt what you planted in faith” – Elizabeth Elliot
- “So whatever thing you have been given, it is but [for] enjoyment of the worldly life. But what is with God is better and more lasting for those who have believed and upon their Lord rely” (Quran 42:36)
2018 was a humbling year. Here’s to 2019, a year in which I choose to manifest giving back.
I hope y’all resonated with some of these points; I would LOVE to hear some things you learned this year in the comment section below!
