I’m honestly so in love with my room and I think its now more important than ever to cultivate a space that makes you feel happy.
Creating a Space You Love
Plant Life and Greenery
So first, as always, I’m gonna recommend some greenery. Now I’m a newbie plant mom and I’ve definitely played a part in the unfortunate demise of at least one of my (former) plant babies… BUT being a plant mama is itself a *growing* experience! (Hehe get it, growing)
I got some of my plants from a local garden in Nashville and others from The Home Depot. They have a wide variety of plants (at super affordable price points), so if you are especially worried about keeping your plants alive, I would recommend starting there!
Low Maintenance House Plants
Some of the easiest house plants to keep are:
- Snake Plants
- Money Tree
- Succulents
- Cacti
- Pothos
- Aloe Vera
Snake Plants are especially productive at purifying the air. They require indirect sunlight and infrequent watering. Also, you can keep them healthy by massaging the leaves with banana peels! Check out Snake Plant maintenance tips from an expert here.
Cacti, for obvious reasons, are super low maintenance. I love the Desert Gems cacti because the flowers are so rich and vibrant in color. The pop of yellow in the plant goes so nicely with other yellow accents in my room- I can’t get enough of it!
Color Scheming
Our room came with black and white striped wallpaper and has a Beatles/70s Rock theme, which I LOVE. But I also knew that a room wouldn’t really feel like my own without a *hearty* amount of yellow in it.
Pick your accent color or the color that makes you feel the most at peace and at home, and select some statement pieces of that color.
These statement pieces should all have utility- we’re all about purposeful and intentional decorating and not just mindless accumulation of items. Examples of things you probably need in your room and can find in your color(s) of choice include:
- Pillows/ Blankets
- Chairs/ Poufs
- Lamps/ Lighting Fixtures
This pouf from The Home Depot is just about my favorite thing. Since I have 6 roommates, there can never be enough places to sit and this makes our room feel a lot more spacious for others to hangout in. I also often sit on it while doing homework if I don’t want to be in bed or at my *makeshift standing desk*- it’s that comfy!
Room Art
I also think that no room is complete without the inclusion of some artwork. Whether that be in the form of album covers, photos, paintings, or graphic design pieces, artwork can always bring the personality of the room together and make a space feel more like your own.
I love supporting BIPOC artists and creators. You can search for super affordable artwork by underrepresented creators on platforms like Etsy and Society 6!
The print that I have in my room is from this Instagram account.

Motivational Decor
As someone obsessed with the beauty of words and language, I’m immensely motivated by quotes. Putting motivational quotes around my space is a great way for me to remind myself of what I can do and what the world holds in store for me.
Personally, I love putting up scriptural quotes because I find these to be the most inspiring. But find whatever words light your soul up, and find a way to incorporate them into your space.
You don’t have to buy anything fancy for this- you could even just write some quotes down on Post-It notes or on canvases. I bought two little wooden signs that I wrote verses on and I find them to be super inspiring. I love waking up to scriptural wisdom every morning! I use command hooks to hang them up along with my accessory wall and they are super durable.
