One of my goals this year is to cook more and expand my selections of produce that I use in meals. Although we all intuitively know that it is far better for us to buy seasonal produce, the year round convenience and presence of produce found at grocery stores makes it easy to forget what even is in season and what is best to buy when.
Eating seasonally not only enhances the taste of the produce, but it increases the nutritional value of the crop while decreasing the need for preservatives and other unnatural additives. Produce that is in season is also cheaper, which is of course a huge plus.
Reasons to Buy Produce In Season:
- Cost Effective
- Puts less strain on the environment
- Less travelling needed
- Freshness and Quality of Produce
- Support Local Farmers
- Prevents Nutritional Erosion of Produce Over Long Travel
Throughout the year, I will update this post with monthly seasonal produce info-graphics. I hope this will be of utility to you. Pull it up on your phone before grocery shopping or keep it in mind when thinking of recipe ideas.
