How to Go Vegan -Guide to Plant Based Eating

So you’re interested in going vegan and want to know how to go vegan….  it seems like everyone else is doing it so it should be easy, right?!

Ehhh not exactly.  Like I talked about in the piece How Veganism Helped Me Recovery From My Eating Disorders, you can learn how to go vegan… but to stay vegan takes an inner motivation and conviction.

Veganism isn’t a diet or a weight loss fad; it’s a lifestyle choice.

When you choose to go vegan, whether it be primarily for the animals, your health, or the planet, you are opting to forgo anything made with animal or animal by-products- which is no small task.

Although the vegan movement is gaining momentum and spreading, a majority of food popularized in U.S. cuisines (the Standard American Diet, or S.A.D.) is not vegan or plant based……So in order to actually stay vegan, you have to be strong in your beliefs and reasoning for choosing this lifestyle.

If you’re not completely certain that you want to go vegan, I recommend educating yourself on the impacts/affects that veganism has on your body and the world before trying out the lifestyle.

If you are apprehensive while trying out veganism, you are more likely to fall out of it…. going into something with the mindset that it won’t work out usually ends in it not working out!

Once you are certain of your decision, there are many ways to go about adopting this lifestyle.

How to Go Vegan- Methods

1) Set Back the Clock

In this method, you choose time intervals (days, weeks, or months) and upon reaching each one, you pledge to eat plant based until a time that gets set back later and later.

For example- One week eating all vegan until after breakfast snack, next week eating all vegan until lunch, next week until after lunch snack.

I think this method is incredibly helpful because it eases you into veganism. Some people don’t adjust well to just going cold-turkey with a diet change, so this method would be great for them.

2) Omnivore at Restaurants

Eat all plant based at home, but when you go out and want to try something not vegan, let yourself.

Eventually this should lead to weaning off meat and dairy products altogether when you eat at home or out.

This method encourages people to eat out less, and not purchase any animal derived products from the grocery store.

3) Incorporate more Plants!

Just make a goal to eat more plants each day– you can even set a goal number! This will not just help you feel healthier, but will allow for a smooth longitudinal transition to veganism.
